Introduction and purpose: The increasing number of elderly people raises the need to pay attention to social support and quality of life as an effective factor in improving their health in urban and rural communities, the aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between perceived social support and quality of life in the elderly‘s urban and rural communities in Ilam.
Material and methods: This was an analytical-cross-sectional study; 180 elderly people over 65 years old living in Ilam city and 110 elderly people in its villages were evaluated in a cluster of 3 urban health centers and 3 rural health centers from December 2022 to March 2023. The data collection tools were the LIPAD questionnaire and the Zimet Scale, which were answered by the elderly using self-report method. Data analysis was done with SPSS version 26 software and descriptive and inferential statistical tests.
Findings: The level of social support for the rural elderly was higher (P=0.03). The level of quality of life among the urban elderly was higher (P=0.03). There was a significant relationship between the social support of the elderly living in the city and the village and their quality of life (P < 0.001). In the elderly (P=0.001), the number of children was higher (P=0.001), the level of social support was higher, and as the education level of the elderly increased, the level of social support decreased more (P=0.001).
Conclusion: According to the higher level of social support in the rural elderly and the higher quality of life in the rural elderly, as well as the significant relationship between social support and the quality of life in these elderly, it is necessary to develop strategies to improve the level of social support in the urban elderly and quality of life in the rural elderly.
