Introduction and purpose: Aging is a natural an inevitable phenomenon of life. However, the elderly can maintain their physical and psychological health by taking appropriate nutritional behaviors throughout the life. One of the most complete hybrid models to study and identify behaviors for creating a new behavior in the community is BASNEF Model. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify influencing factors on improvement of healthy nutritional behaviors among elderly in Sanandaj, Iran.

Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive and analytical study, which was conducted based on the BASNEF Model on 150 aged people at 18 health centers of Sanandaj, Iran in 2014. Participants were recruited using simple random sampling method. We used a self-developed questionnaire including demographic characteristics using BASNEF model. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 16 using Spearman and Fisher's exact test.

Findings: Findings indicated that attitude regarding behavior (r=0.292, p=0.002), enabling factors (r=0.30, p=0.001), and behavioral intention (r=0.301, p=0.001) were significantly correlated with healthy nutritional behaviors of elderly. However, knowledge, behavioral assessment, and abstract norms had no significant correlation with healthy nutritional behaviors of elderly women. Therefore, physicians were identified as the most effective factor on proper nutritional behavior among the elderly.

Conclusion: According to the results of this study, promoting intention and attitude regarding behavior and enabling factors were influential factors to improve healthy eating among elderly. Therefore, it is recommended to improve dietary status of elderly using nutrition educational interventions.
